There is nothing special about my mother's potato salad. Just like many other recipes here, it was brought from one country on one continent to another country on another continent. In the process of immigration the main ingredient went from being called "Kartoffel" to "papas." My father's aunt, Tia Teresa Wolf Schwagger Baechler, was taught to make it in La Providencia, an orphanage for children of German background in Santiago. My mother was taught to make it by Tia Teresa as a daily staple for my father, who had lived with his aunt ever since he came to work in Santiago at the age of 16. I had seen my mother make it many times, but I didn’t learn to make it myself until I realized it was a meaningful representation of caregiving in my family.
There is nothing special about my mother's potato salad. The ingredients aren't secret, rare or expensive. It wasn't made only once per year or only on special holidays. Instead my mother's potato salad was a staple dish on the dinner table regularly, and as a 4 year-old I would remember Tia Teresa's potato salad on the table on Sunday, among other daily delicacies.
There is nothing special about my mother's potato salad. I have made it and shared it here at My Mother's Recipe for two years. What is special is that this daily staple from Germany has traveled three continents and has nourished three generations and will continue to do so for my mother and for me. It's special that my mother is here today, and that I made her this potato salad, a family tradition that will continue for generations to come.
