If I should need a nursing home

My beautiful, smart, hot shot daughter is a seasoned Nurse Practitioner and Associate Director of Nursing for heart transplant program at a major New York City hospital. She is also witty, comedic and she keeps me laughing. Here I will quote her and maybe it’s a joke, “Mother, if you remain as difficult and grumpy when you are old and in need of care as you are now, then off to the nursing home you will go!”

What She Said To Her Nieces

My friend Martha closed the loop on her old age care well in advance. She’s got that covered. She told her nieces, “Just put me in a nursing home.” She doesn't want to be a burden to any one. Who knows better than a serial caregiver.

I got that covered. Plan for plan B

My friend Mark thinks he has a plan to avoid going to nursing home. “I have a daughter. She is going to take care of me.” He’s got that covered. When Mark is 85 years-old his daughter will be 41 years old. That would be mid-career Generation Y.

Feed Me in the Nursing Home

If I ever need a puree diet then I am only accepting items that are meant to be in that consistency, for example oatmeal, mashed potatoes, pudding, ice cream and perhaps butternut squash, like the frozen kind that is already mashed up. I wrote in my living will that I am NOT to be served puree of something that isn't naturally of puree consistency. Pureed ground beef. Pureed corn kernels, pureed broccoli. I truly hope I have the wherewithal to promptly spit it out.
