Humor is Healing

On a Jet Plane

April 1, 2017

To my daughters, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, adult grands and little greatgrand,

Bye bye. I've packed my bags. I'm leaving. Why not? After all most of you did at some point. So I'm a little late? What's so different about me packing up for an adventure than you guys buying a three-month Eurail Pass and vagabonding across Europe or farming kiwi fruit on a Kibbutz or even decamping to New Jersey or California? You all had your adventures.

Its time the tables got turned. That's right, I sit in this Lazy-Boy day in and day out watching Law and Order on TV and in the evening or weekends you guys come sit on my couch and plan your trips to the backwoods of Maine and New Hampshire. What about me? I want to walk the Appalachian trail too.

You call me sedentary. You say I don't even walk to the kitchen, but now I will prove you are wrong. I'm giving this deep dent in the chair cushion a break. Look here, I went out and got my passport. I bought some maps and put little pencil circles around the places I want to visit. I'm going to visit exciting places just like you guys do.

I packed up the old suitcase with winter and summer clothes and one pair of my favorite socks. I could be gone awhile depending on the train schedules. I want all of you to know that I am not running away from home, just expanding my horizons and seeing some new sights.  I can't say when I will be back but I will be sending regular post cards. Little old me is off on an adventure. Most importantly, don't worry. Independence grows stronger with age.

Love,

Helen

Helen with Passport

All my bags are packed
I'm ready to go
I'm standin' here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breakin'
It's early morn
The taxi's waitin'
He's blowin' his horn
Already I'm so lonesome
I could die
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
'Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go
